Manchester: Guide
Manchester is een stad en District (Engeland)|Engels district in het graafschap Greater Manchester. De oppervlakte bedraagt 115,7 km² en is met 422.302 inwoners (2002) de 6e stad in Engeland. De agglomeratie Greater Manchester heeft ruim 2,6 miljoen inwoners.
Manchester geldt in de hele wereld als het archetype van een textielstad (zie: Manchesters van deze wereld), mede omdat Vlaamse wevers zich er vestigden. De stad was belangrijk bij de opkomst van de industriële revolutie.
Manchester is onder andere bekend vanwege de voetbalclub Manchester United. Een tweede club uit de stad is Manchester City.
Popmuziek
Manchester was de thuisbasis van The Bee Gees in hun beginjaren. Andere bekende bands uit Manchester zijn The Hollies en 10CC.
In de jaren 80 en 90 van de 20e eeuw was Manchester het centrum van vernieuwing van de britse popmuziek en thuisbasis van een aantal toonaangevende bands en clubs. Bekende bands zijn o.a. Take That, Joy Division, New Order, Buzzcocks, Oasis, Inspiral Carpets, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Simply Red, Charlatans en The Smiths.
Een van de aanjagers was de platenmaatschappij Factory Records.
De nachtclub Hacienda genoot wereldfaam in totdat de zaak begin jaren 90 werd gesloten wegens problemen met bendes en drugs.
Klassieke muziek
Het Hallé Orchestra is het symfonieorkest van Manchester. Dit orkest geeft concerten in de Bridgewater Hall. Ook het BBC Philharmonic Orchestra heeft Manchester als thuishaven.
