Dingwall (Ding, soort rechtbank. De Gaelische naam betekent monding van de Peffery.

Koning Allexander II maakte van Dingwall een koninklijke Burgh in 1266 en deze oorkonde werd door Jacobus IV vernieuwd. Dingwall was vroeger de hoofdstad van de County Ross and Cromarty.

Dingwall is de thuisstad van de voetbalclub Ross County die in de Schotse eerste divisie speelt.
