Samsun: Guide

Samsun is een stad in het noorden van Turkije, gelegen aan de Zwarte Zee en de hoofdstad van de gelijknamige provincie Samsun (provincie)|Samsun. Samsun heeft 396.900 inwoners (2004).

Samsun is de grootste Turkse stad aan de Zwarte Zee, een van de grootste steden van Turkije en het belangrijkste industriële en economische centrum van de regio. De stad is gelegen in het middengedeelte van de Turkse Zwarte Zeekust, zo'n 850 km ten oosten van Istanbul en zo'n 450 km ten noordoosten van Ankara.

Geschiedenis

De oudste opgravingen die een nederzetting suggereren stammen uit de Milesiërs kreeg ze rond 750 v. Chr. de naam Amisos.

In latere tijden was het de residentie van de bisschop. In 1413 veroverde de Ottomaanse Rijk|Ottomaanse Sultan Mehmed I de stad op de Seltsjoeken.

Onder Ataturk verkreeg de stad een hogere mate van belangrijkheid. Hij begon ook vanaf hier op 19 mei 1919 met de Turkse onafhankelijkheidsoorlog.

Economie

Samsun is een van de grootste Turkse centra van de Tabaksteelt|tabaksindustrie en heeft mede daarom ook de grootste Turkse haven van de Zwarte Zee.

Klimaat

Samsun heeft een gematigd klimaat|gematigd zeeklimaat, met koele winters en warme zomers, met een hoge neerslagkans verspreid over het hele jaar.
