Pamukkale: Guide
Pamukkale betekent "kasteel van katoen" in het Turks en is een natuurfenomeen in Turkije. Pamukkale ligt ten noorden van Denizli (stad)|Denizli in Turkije.
Het sterk kalkhoudende water loopt er via een groot aantal terrassen van een helling.
Uit het warme water (35°) slaat calciumcarbonaat neer en zo worden dikke pakketten kalk langs de terrassen afgezet. Op deze manier krijgt de helling een bijzonder uitzicht: het lijkt op een op kasteel van katoen of op een bevroren waterval. Door het grote aantal toeristen wordt het proces van kalkvorming echter aangetast.
Pamukkale is momenteel een toeristische plaats en is samen met de oudheidkundige stad Hierapolis opgenomen in de United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization|UNESCO-Lijst van monumenten op de Werelderfgoedlijst|werelderfgoedlijst.
