Istanbul, ook wel Istanboel (isˈtɑnbul; voorheen Byzantium (stad)|Byzantium en [[Constantinopel geheten, in veel Slavische talen vroeger Tsargrad genoemd) is met bijna 8,5 miljoen geregistreerde en 3 miljoen niet-geregistreerde inwoners de grootste stad van Turkije. De stad bestaat uit 27 districten, die tezamen de hoofdstad van de gelijknamige Provincielijst van de Republiek Turkije|provincie Istanbul (provincie)|Istanbul vormen.
Ligging
De stad heeft een zeer strategie|strategische ligging. Ze ligt in het westen van het land, deels in Europa (continent)|Europa, deels in Azië, en is daarmee de enige stad ter wereld die in twee continenten ligt. De Bosporus, die Europa van Azië scheidt, loopt door Istanbul heen, en komt in het zuiden in de Zee van Marmara en in het noorden in de Zwarte Zee uit. Twee bruggen over de Bosporus in Istanbul verbinden Europa met Azië.
Naam
Voor de herkomst van de Turkse naam Istanbul worden verschillende verklaringen gegeven. Hij zou van het Grieks|Griekse Constantinopoulis kunnen zijn afgeleid. Vaker gehoord is de verklaring is dat hij van het Griekse stin polin of eis tin polin ("in de stad") is afgeleid; in het Byzantijnse rijk werd Constantinopel immers vaak aangeduid als "de Stad".
Nog een verklaring is dat de naam afkomstig is van de ten tijde van de Sultan Mustafa III in vele officiële brieven en documenten gangbare praktijk om Islambol en af en toe Islambul te gebruiken . Islambol betekent "Veel Islam" en Islambul "Vind de Islam" in het Turks.
De naam wordt in het Turks uitgesproken met de klemtoon op de tweede lettergreep. In het Nederlands is de klemtoon op de eerste lettergreep veel gebruikelijker.
Spelling in het Nederlands

Zowel de spellingsvarianten 'Istanboel' als 'Istanbul' zijn volgens de Nederlandse Taalunie correct. In Vlaanderen wordt Istanboel vaker gebruikt, in Nederland is Istanbul couranter. Hoewel in het Turks een punt op de 'I' staat, wordt deze in het Nederlands normaal gesproken niet weergegeven. In het Turks is de correcte spelling met punt, omdat de uitspraak van de i zonder punt en de i met punt in die taal, in tegenstelling tot het Nederlands, verschilt.
Heel af en toe treft men de oude naam Constantinopel nog aan.
Geschiedenis
Het artikel over Oost-Romeinse/Byzantijnse Rijk. Vanaf 1453 was het de hoofdstad van het Ottomaanse Rijk. In verschillende hoedanigheden is het dus vele eeuwen lang een van de belangrijkste steden van de wereld geweest. In 1930 ging de stad officieel
İstanbul heten. In 1923 heeft het de status van hoofdstad van Turkije moeten afstaan aan Ankara.
Districten (2000)
De Gouden Hoorn en de Bosporus splitsen de stad in feite in drie delen, twee op het Europese continent en één op het Aziatische. Van de twee Europese delen is bevat de westelijke helft de oude stad (Constantinopel). Deze is onderverdeeld in de districten Fatih en Eminönü. Verder ten westen en ten noorden hiervan bevinden zich de districten Eyüp, Bayrampaşa, Gaziosmanpaşa, Esenler, Bağcılar, Güngören, Zeytinburnu, Bahçelievler, Bakırköy, Avcılar en Küçükçekmece.
Het gedeelte van de stad oostelijk van de Gouden Hoorn was waar in de Osmaanse tijd de door Republiek Venetië|Venetiaanse handelaren bewoonde wijk Galata lag. Dit is tegenwoordig ingedeeld in het district Beyoğlu. Verder ten noorden en oosten hiervan liggen de districten Şişli, Kağıthane, Sarıyer en Beşiktaş (district)|Beşiktaş.
Op het Aziatische deel van de stad, tenslotte, bevinden zich de districten Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Beykoz, Ümraniye, Maltepe, Kartal, Pendik en Tuzla (İstanbul)|Tuzla.
Adalar is een apart district dat de Prinseneilanden bevat.

De stad heeft daarnaast nog imposante moskeeën zoals de Süleymaniye-moskee en de Blauwe moskee.

De Galatatoren
Twee bruggen verbinden de Europa (continent)|Europese en Azië|Aziatische delen van de stad: de Bosporusbrug en de Fatih Sultan Mehmet-brug, genoemd naar Mehmet II|Mehmet de Veroveraar.
Over de Bosporus kan men een boottocht maken.
De Prinseneilanden, negen eilanden in de Zee van Marmara, waarvan er 4 bezocht kunnen worden per boot.
De Basilica Cisterne, een 6e eeuwse ondergrondse wateropslagplaats
Universiteiten
Er zijn diverse universiteiten in de stad gevestigd: de İstanbul-universiteit (1453), de Technische Universiteit Istanbul (1773), de Bogazici-universiteit de Bilgi-universiteit, de Koç-universiteit, de Mimar Sinan-universiteit, de Marmara-universiteit, de Galatasaray-universiteit, de Yıldız technische universiteit, de Fatih-universiteit.
Luchthavens
Bij Istanbul ligt de internationale luchthaven Atatürk International Airport|Atatürk. Recentelijk is er in het district Pendik de tweede luchthaven (luchthaven Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen|Sabiha Gökçen) geopend.
