Ankara: Guide
Ankara is de hoofdstad van Turkije en tevens het hoofdstadsdistrict van de gelijknamige provincielijst van de Republiek Turkije|provincie Ankara (provincie)|Ankara. Het is de op één na grootste stad van het land. In 1997 had de stad 2,9 miljoen inwoners, in 2002 gegroeid naar 3,5 miljoen inwoners. De grootste stad van Turkije is Istanbul, in het westen van
Turkije. Ankara heeft echter een meer centrale ligging.
Geschiedenis
In de klassieke oudheid heette Ankara "Ancyra", en in een latere periode "Angora", en was de stad bekend om de wol van langhare geiten, de angorageitenwol of mohair. De stad heeft nog veel Romeinse Rijk|Romeinse en Byzantijnse Keizerrijk|Byzantijnse resten.
De stad is volgens een oude sage door koning Midas (mythologie)|Midas gesticht, in de 9e eeuw v.C. In 621 na Christus werd de stad door de Arabieren ingenomen. Niet lang daarna heroverden de Byzantijnen de stad weer. In de 13e eeuw namen de Seltsjoeken het bewind over. In 1919 koos Mustafa Kemal (Mustafa Kemal Atatürk|Atatürk) de stad als woonplaats. In 1923 werd Ankara de hoofdstad van de nieuwe republiek Turkije.
Bezienswaardigheden
De kleine oude stadskern binnen de muren van de vesting (Hisar) heeft nog altijd een typisch Oosters uiterlijk. Er zijn veel kleine winkeltjes. De Arslanhane moskee dateert uit 1290. Uit de Romeinse periode dateren de thermen (217 n.C.). Ook zijn er de resten van de aan keizer Augustus en de godin Roma (godin)|Roma gewijde tempel. Moderner is het mausoleum van Mustafa Kemal Atatürk|Atatürk (Anıt Kabir). Het belangrijkste museum is het museum van de Anatolië|Anatolische beschavingen, met Neolitische kunst en Hittieten|Hittitische beelden en reliëfs.
