Białystok: Guide

Białystok ( ; Wit-Russsisch: Беласток, Biełastok) is een stad met ongeveer 290.000 inwoners in het noordoosten van Polen. Het is de hoofdstad van de provincie Podlachië.

Białystok heeft een geneeskundeacademie en een technische universiteit. Tot de historische bezienswaardigheden behoren de 16e-eeuwse kerk en een 18e-eeuws paleis.

Economie

Białystok is een belangrijk regionaal industriecentrum en een knooppunt in het spoorwegvervoer. De stad is vooral bekend om zijn linnengoed, maar er zijn ook diverse fabrieken die een verscheidenheid van vervaardigde goederen produceren.

Bezienswaardigheden

Białystok heeft een aantal monumenten, waaronder:
het Barokke architectuur|barokke raadhuis
het zgn. Branicki-Paleis
een kerk uit de 16de eeuw

Geschiedenis

Białystok werd gesticht in 1310. De stad werd ingenomen door Pruisen in 1795 en door Rusland in 1807. In 1921 kwam de stad weer in Poolse handen. Białystok werd verwoest tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog; ongeveer de helft van de bevolking van de stad, hoofdzakelijk joden, werd gedood door Duitse troepen.

Verkeer en vervoer

Białystok is via een Intercity verbonden met Warschau. Verder zijn er verbindingen met diverse plaatsen in de omgeving, alsmede met buurland Litouwen.
