Klaipėda: Guide
Klaipėda (Nemunas afvoert, zijn enige doorgang naar zee heeft. Klaipėda is de voornaamste plaats in het historische gebied Samogitië. Tot 1945 was de stad vooral bekend onder haar Duitse naam Memel, tevens de Duitse naam van de rivier waaraan ze ligt.
Historie
Klaipėda vierde in 2002 zijn 750-jarig bestaan. De Lijflandse Orde, de Lijfland|Lijflandse tak van de Duitse Orde, bouwde hier in 1252 de Memelburg. Memel, de bijbehorende stad, trad al in 1254 toe tot de Hanze en kreeg in 1257 Lübecks stadsrechten|stadsrecht.
In 1328 werden de Memelburg en de stad Memel onderdeel van de Ordestaat, waarna de stad een eeuw een twistappel bleef tussen de Orde en de Litouwers. De Vrede van Meln van 1422 wees de stad definitief aan de Orde toe, de voorloper van Pruisen, waartoe ze tot 1919 zou blijven behoren.
In 1525 werd de stad Lutheranisme|luthers. In latere eeuwen kreeg Memel nog met Zweedse en Russische belagers te maken.
In 1812 stak Napoleon Bonaparte|Napoleon hier de rivier over met zijn Grande Armée, op weg naar Moskou.
Als gevolg van de Vrede van Versailles (1919)|Vrede van Versailles moest Duitsland, waartoe Pruisen inmiddels behoorde, de stad opgeven en werd vanaf 1920 het zogenoemde Memelland (Memel en een strook op de rechteroever van de gelijknamige rivier) onder toezicht van de Volkenbond geplaatst. Deze stuurde er Franse troepen heen. In 1923 gaven deze troepen de stad op, toen het inmiddels onafhankelijke Litouwen het Memelland gewapenderhand opeiste. In 1925 kreeg de stad haar huidige naam Klaipėda. Het gebied behield een autonome status.
In 1939 werd Klaipėda, dat toen nog steeds vooral door Duitsers bewoond werd, wederom Duits: Litouwen droeg de stad 'vrijwillig' (na een ultimatum van Berlijn) over aan nazi-Duitsland en hoopte daarbij op steun bij de aanspraak op Vilnius, dat destijds Pools was. Na de overdracht van Klaipėda aan Duitsland vluchtten 21.000 Litouwers uit de stad naar Litouwen. Hiervan waren 9000 Joden|Joods.
In de nadagen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog leed de stad zware schade. De burgerbevolking vluchtte en de Sovjet-Unie nam de puinhopen in. Na 1945 bleven er bijna geen Duitsers in dit gebied door vlucht voor en deportatie door de Sovjet-troepen. Van 1945 tot 1990 maakte Klaipėda deel uit van de Litouwse SSR.
