Sapporo: Guide
Sapporo (札幌市;Sapporo-shi) is de hoofdstad van het Japanse eiland Hokkaido. De stad is gesticht aan het eind van de 19e eeuw, ten tijde van de Meiji-restauratie, en telt circa 1,8 miljoen inwoners.
In 1972 werden in Sapporo de Olympische Winterspelen 1972|Olympische Winterspelen gehouden. Sapporo was ook kandidaat voor de Olympische Winterspelen 2016|Winterspelen van 2016, maar trok zich terug op 21 februari 2006, wegens een gebrek aan financiële middelen, aldus burgemeester Fumio Ueda.
Jaarlijks vindt hier in februari het door miljoenen bezochte sneeuwfestival plaats, bekend dankzij de enorme gebouwen die van ijs en sneeuw worden opgetrokken.
De naam komt uit de taal van de Ainu (volk)|Ainu, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Hokkaido, en betekent 'groot droog land', of 'belangrijke rivier die door de vlakte stroomt'.
Er komen Hout|houtproducten en het bekende Sapporo-bier vandaan.
